Hampstead Theatre and The Winch are delighted to launch a programme of free workshops for the Camden community. Uniquely devised in partnership with residents from the local area, Community Creates will provide free arts and crafts activities in various local locations from September 2022 through to 2023.
Activities include, playwriting and storytelling; movement and dance; filmmaking and photography; pottery and sculpture; knitting and crochet. The workshops will be suitable for all ages and abilities and led by a mix of local Camden residents and professionals. Through, Community Creates, residents can meet new people and have fun in a friendly and relaxed space. They will also be able to contribute to devising the programme to ensure there’s something for everyone.

The Community Creates programme is curated by a steering group of residents and artists who meet regularly to discuss and plan the programme on behalf of the local community. This Creates Forum is led by a local resident employed by North Camden Zone, alongside Hampstead Theatre, The Winch and other partner organisations.
Community Creates has grown out of the success of the North Camden Zone resident-led programme, Hilgrove Creates. Inspired by Hilgrove Creates, Hampstead Theatre and North Camden Zone each recently led a successful ten-week pilot programme for the residents of the Chalcots and Hilgrove Estates, with the theatre focusing on playwriting and North Camden Zone offering painting.
Building on these successes, today is the launch of a longer-term collaboration to deliver a range of workshops and projects for Camden residents. Both organisations have received funding from Camden Council’s Community Infrastructure Levy.
Tessa Walker, Associate Director at Hampstead Theatre, said:
“We are delighted to launch these workshops today, with North Camden Zone, to further connect with our surrounding community. We have recently created a new Participation and Literary department to allow us to support this year-long programme, across many years, so we continue to create many more exciting projects with, for and by, our local community.”
Esther Norman, Programme Director of North Camden Zone at The Winch, said:
“We are thrilled to be working in partnership with Hampstead Theatre; the Community Creates programme builds on our work to support local residents to make changes to improve their local neighbourhood. This is the third time following Humans of Hilgrove and Hilgrove Creates, that residents employed as Community Organisers have curated an arts initiative to connect and inspire their local community.”
Sharon Willems, Creates Forum Community Organiser and Hilgrove resident, said:
”Hilgrove Creates was initiated to empower local artists and increase access to the arts for our local residents. As a resident artist and community organiser, I've seen first-hand how the success of Hilgrove Creates cultivated new friendships, increased pride in our area and strengthened our community connections. I'm deeply honoured and excited to be part of this new phase of the program”.
